For me, Pimsleur is a great way to begin learning a language. In that sense you really hit the ground running, and that's exciting and fun! Typical language courses have a lot of book study in the beginning and it can be less than motivating.

The thing I really like about Pimsleur is that you begin in your very first lesson to hear and speak full sentences as part of a conversation. The other comments are correct and good, but I'd like to add a bit. I'm pretty sure not all of that credit is due to one Pimsleur lesson, but it sure helped. One of my Chinese friends, who I often practice my Mandarin with, commented on my pronunciation, letting me know it was really good.

Even though I already knew everything in that one lesson (at that point, I had already taken two years of Mandarin), I felt I was able to pronounce the words more properly. I thought it was pretty decent for a basic lesson.

I've taken Mandarin in school and went through that short free trial of Pimsleur's Mandarin (Lesson 1) on the website. When he went to China for a business trip, people assumed he grew up there since he spoke it so well. One of my friend's co-worker went through Pimsleur's Mandarin. I have gone through Pimsleur's Mandarin (first five lessons.working on building up the required discipline to actually get through one of these programs fully) and I've had Chinese people tell me that I speak better than they do.
